Closely fought win for Mellor 'B' team
Good blend of experience, youth and enthusiasm get Mellor home
In a very closely fought game with Poynton 'B' team, Mellor initially took a substantial lead and were worthy of the half time score of 8-4.
The experienced straight defence of MOTM 'Screwy' Driver - with his unerringly accurate long clearances, Alistair Hodgson and Richard Noble kept the lively Poynton attack well under control.
Unfortunately a serious shoulder injury to Richard, four minutes before half time, meant him having to go off to hospital (all best wishes, Richard).
Poynton took advantage of the disruption and in the third quarter scored five goals in response to Mellor's two, both scored by Matt Smallman - three quarter time score - 10-9.
With all the Mellor team pulling together and good possession from the centre, Mellor held their nerve and the Poynton defence could never get to grips with the combination of the elusive Daniel Hodgson and his combination play with captain Matt Smallman - indeed Matt went on to score all three goals in the final quarter - so he scored all of Mellor's last five goals - an end result of 13-12 to Mellor.
Congratulations to both teams for an evenly fought contest played in a very good spirit.
