Match report by Stephen McMylor

A windy morning and the girls barely had time to draw breath as the second of the back to back matches commenced on the Wirral.
Despite their earlier endeavours Mellor got off to a lively start with an attack down the right flank. This culminated in, what is fast becoming, a trademark opening goal from Amy Ram. The margin, however, was almost immediately cancelled out by a swift return from Oxton which levelled the score at 1-1. Oxton, who looked suitably rested between games, quickly found a rhythm that Mellor struggled to contain and the score climbed steadily to 4-1 to Oxton, with plenty of the first half still remaining. The mood changed half way through the first half and both teams began to bear their teeth, with a girl from each team being sidelined for two minutes for stick swiping. However, Lady Luck still wasn’t smiling on Mellor, with Aoife having a cracking shot saved; the score shot up to 7-1. At this point the Mellor defence appeared to say “enough is enough” and began to stand their ground with increasing effect, with Mary Mac having players literally bouncing off her. The attackers immediately responded accordingly with Sophie intercepting an Oxton ball and launching an assault which saw Miranda bring the score to 7-2. As soon as the ball was back in play, the now on fire, Miranda produced a spectacular solo effort to once again narrow the gap to 7-3. The feeling now was that Mellor were sensing blood, which is unfortunately what they got as Matty took a clout on the nose on the stroke of half time and treated the girls to a quite spectacular nosebleed. This unfortunately was the end of brave Matty’s game.
The second half started with relentless attacks from Oxton but could only manage two goals due to some majestic goalkeeping from Aimee. Again, despite heavy legs, Mellor picked up the pace and Amy Ram saw a great shot saved but managed to pick the ball up and score on the rebound. Another Miranda/Amy/Aoife attack saw an impressive, speculative lob, fade to nothing but showed that creativity was still being enjoyed despite the scoreline. Mellor continued to fight and, after another goal from Aoife and a reactionary save from Aimee, the full time whistle blew following a similar incident to the first half and an Oxton girl receiving a bang in the face from the ball.
Final score 10-5 to Oxton.
