The Mellor Girls U15 team faced a challenging triangular match including Oxton and Stockport on a bright but blustery morning on the Wirral.
U15 Girls V Stockport
Stockport started the game with real purpose and Mellor were forced to defend from the face off, a great save from Aimee R prevented Stockport taking an early lead. Mellor counter attacked with Annabel N who running from defence skilfully pass to Amy R, who calmly slotted the ball past the advancing Stockport goalkeeper, 1-0 to Mellor.
Stockport responded with a sustained period of pressure and despite good defensive work by Mary M and Emily N, Mellor found themselves 2-1 down and struggling to contain a Stockport side full of pace and great movement off the ball.
Mellor continued to work hard and were rewarded when Patsy S, demonstrating great stick skills, passed to Aoife T who ran through the Stockport defence to score Mellor’s equalising goal, 2-2.
Stockport took control of the second quarter of the game with 5 goals in quick succession leaving Mellor 7-2 behind and struggling to stay in the game. However Mellor showed great spirit and as half time approached Miranda intercepted a Stockport pass and released Aoife T, who ran in on goal and skilfully slotted the ball past the Stockport goalkeeper.
HT Mellor 3-7 Stockport
Mellor started the second half with renewed belief, clearly having benefitted from Coach Jenny C half time team talk. Stockport’s disciplined defending made it difficult for Mellor to create any real scoring opportunity, that was until Miranda B made a penetrating run through the Stockport defence, her first shot was brilliantly saved by the Stockport goalkeeper however Miranda B was quickest to pick up the loose ball and slammed it into the Stockport goal. Game on….4-7.
Mellor continued to work hard to close the 3 goal deficit, however despite a good period of possession they continued to find it difficult to create many scoring opportunities and as Mellor pressed for a 5th goal, Stockport counter attacked and scored, 4-8.
The Mellor team continued to work hard and were rewarded in the final quarter of the game with further goals from Miranda B and Any R. The final whistle was blown and despite having lost 6-8, Mellor had shown great determination and team spirit in what was without question “a game of two halves.”
