Another beautiful day, perfect conditions and two wins in a triangular match including Norbury and Cheadle may have lulled us into a false sense of security for the season to come. Not that we should be concerned. Mellor U15 girls fully deserved to win both matches having played with passion and energy throughout, ably governed by their coaches, Jenny & Jess.
In our first match against Norbury, we accelerated quickly to a convincing lead. Amy Ramsbottom, virtually untouchable in her mobility and handling scored 4 and made 3 assists as Norbury were swept aside. But Norbury aren’t slouches and they mounted a superb fight back. Leading up to half time, they pegged Mellor back and it could have been level at the break. Aimee Rogerson in Mellor Goal made 9 great saves with shins and elbows, ably assisted by Mary McMyler in defence who produced several cracking interceptions and checks.
Some tough talking at half time galvanised Mellor back onto the offensive although it was by no means one way traffic. Aoife Teegan scored 4 times and made 2 assists whilst both goal keepers continued to keep the ball at bay.
The difference between the 2 sides could easily have been the support the younger members of Mellor girls, including Maya Lancaster in her first match, gave to their older team mates. Whether helping to spread the game, making darting movements around the attacking goalmouth or providing incisive passing, it was a real team effort that enabled Mellor to win the match 10 – 7.
