On a bitterly cold but thankfully dry day, the Mellor girls faced Timperley in their final league game of the season. This this was no ordinary league game – it was a league, winner takes all decider with both teams level on points at the top, each having won all their previous league games and separated only by goal difference.

As has been the case in many games this season Mellor made a slow start and were quickly behind to a goal in the first 2 minutes and Timperley continued to be in the ascendency soon doubling their lead.
However this seemed to stir the Mellor girls and the match became much more competitive with both teams competing hard for every ball. Mellor’s efforts were soon rewarded with a goal, with Katie H converting a pass for Annabel N to make the score 1-2. Timperley responded strongly and though the game remained very competitive, they scored just before half time to restore their 2 goal lead.

The second half began in a similar vein to the first with Timperley quickly scoring twice to increase their lead. Mellor responded strongly and were unfortunate on a number of occasions, notably denied by the frame of the goal and a fine save by the Timperley goalie. However Timperley responded again and despite some excellent goalkeeping from Olivia, increased their lead with 2 more goals. Mellor responded again with another goal from Katie H from a run and pass by Lucy M. The game continued at the fast, feisty, competitive pace it had done throughout, but it was Timperley’s generally older, so stronger team that deservedly scored the final goal of the game to secure an 8-2 win and the League.

The Mellor girls should be proud of their performance - determined, feisty and maintaining a fantastic team spirit throughout the game. They never gave up and pushed Timperley hard all the way.

Overall, Mellor U13 Girls finish 2nd in the first ever Northern Girls Lacrosse league.
