Despite our keeper turning up at the wrong ground, and arriving just as the whistle blew, it was an unusually fast start by the team. A couple of good saves to start the game led to a period of possession for us where we looked sharp in attack, as we moved the ball well, and finished clinically as we swiftly went 3-0 up. We continued to ask questions of their defence and should have extended our lead before they pulled 1 back as we ended 3-1 up.
Whilst we extended our lead at the start of the 2nd, Norbury/Cheadle came back into it with our defence allowing their strong attacking players to get too many clean shots on goal as the half ended 4-4. Against the better teams this year we have tended to have qtrs where we switch off and do everything to try to lose a match. The 3rd qtr was one of those - too slow in passing in attack leading to sloppy turnovers and too many poor shot choices from distance, whilst in defence we lost both shape and aggression as we found ourselves outmuscled time and again. A 4-0 qtr loss to end the 3rd 4-8 down.
With the game seemingly sliding away, the aim was to win the 4th and 2 quick goals saw us back in it before 4 more goals were then traded as we found ourselves 8-10 down with a couple of minutes remaining. We pulled 1 back and had a time out with just over 50 secs left. We lost the face and the game looked over but they were penalised for not using the ball as the seconds ticked down. A quick throw up field and a couple of passes found Matt who equalised to tie it at 10-10.
A great team effort to come back today against a good side in an entertaining game to watch. Luke was exceptional in attack scoring 8 and our defence (when they're switched on!) showed they can stop quality attackers whilst Will again showed he's as good as anyone saving 1 on 1. All the boys played their part today - a big pitch with only 1 sub but we never stopped running and deserved our draw in the end.
Goals: Luke (8), Matt (2). Saves Will 10 plus.
