The game was played as an 8 a-side which should have favoured Mellor’s pacey midfield but a slow pitch and some very good play from the home team kept the score pretty well pegged to the end. The home side led after the first quarter by 3-2 and Mellor dug deep to finish the first half slightly ahead at 4-5. Will made a string of saves throughout the game and the defence in front of him were pretty resilient considering the quality of the opposition. In particular Will Tadman showed great fighting qualities and aggressive athleticism to cancel out the effects of the pressure applied to Mellor. The third quarter seemed to be all about Mellor as they pulled 4 goals ahead through great teamwork. However they took their collective foot off the pedal and allowed the home side to claw back into the game seeing out the quarter at 7-8. The final quarter was a much more cagey affair. Will again made a string of great saves while blotting his copybook with an unfortunate own-goal after a great low save in the mud. The game levelled at 9-9 but Mellor just had enough skill and team play to carve out a couple of great goals from Dan Jones and Drew Bickerton to make the game safe. Overall it was a decent team performance. Mellor could be a little cleverer towards the ends of quarters by trying to hold the ball more and kill the game off. However, there was a lot of good team spirit today, a lot of hard running and a lot of good solid work. Well done Mellor. - Match Report by Dominic MacDonald - Man of the Match – Will Tadman for his energetic commitment to the game and his unselfish team play.
