The boys dug deep in this game, fought so hard for the ball and deserved more from the game. No discredit to Brooklands, a great well drilled side. Here we have Oliver Rogerson's views on the game, enjoy!
All week the game loomed around our heads, not knowing the outcome of such a big game our thoughts. However, as the game grew so ever closer nerves were in the atmosphere. We were all up for it though, with jays pre game dancing "throwing some crazy shapes to some dirty beats" despite the 2 previous defeats. But now, the time came when what people call "the young Ghandi of his generation" stepped up to the plate and led his men on the salt March: Oli Rogerson stepped up and delivered a speech that would make a blind see the light for the first time; he turned water in to wine and marched out leading the team. It turns out we lost 10-0.
The whistle went to signify the start of the first quarter and jay, knowing he had a tough opponent taking face off, didn't disappoint. With mellor giving it their all, we gave them a run for their money. Lewis the Venus fly trap font snatching upon every interception and going straight through on the ground balls, he made it tough for them to get a shot off. Despite this, their many subs and us going strong with only two, they seized upon there opportunity and bagged the first goal seconds before the close of the first quarter.
With the fearsome Dan Watson wanting it just as much as us and the timid and shy Danny hodgson having an input, we went in to the second quarter with great expectations of ourselves. As more shots came in at us, our superstar keeper Oli Robinson did not disappoint, he was a brick wall in the goal. As we began to become more settled on the pitch, Rory Heydon and Matt Watson became a threat with their dodges and off ball movement. Will Moore, being a pain on crease also caused problems for the Brooklands defence. Unfortunately, Brooklands bagged a quick three Goals meaning we went in at half time 4-0 down.
Still with high hopes mellor went into the 3rd quarter as they did the first and with George keeping us afloat with his big bodies left brooklands dropping like flies. Josh Benson continued to find his way through Brookland's back door, as he is now known to do (before falling over), seemed to be working, however they found the only way to stop him was the hack at him as though he was a tree. 3rd quarter finishing 7-0.
As the fourth quarter commenced, Jay still put up a fight up with face and we were out for a goal. With Ben Smallman who is know for "just having shots" didn't let us down by causing a threat. Jay and Rory also hitting the post and with little George getting stuck in, looking to be a pain the final whistle blew final score
10-0.
Overall, it was a great effort by the Mellor team but were unfortunately beaten by the better team. The first time the U16s played them, they lost 11-0 and the first comment the majority of the team made was that Brooklands would win the cup.
