Match report done by Mr Jack Wallace
This weekend saw Mellor take on Wilmslow in what was yet another convincing performance by the Mellor boys in an 11-7 win.
Mellor were disappointed when only 7 Wilmslow players turned up as it meant it would be yet another game played 8-a-side with one of the Mellor players having to make up the numbers, which was unfortunate as we actually had 12 players this weekend, with the new addition of Connor making his debut after just one training session. However, this did give the players the luxury of 3 subs and the coach the unusual headache of getting the players game time.
In what was a surprisingly sunny day at Brabyns Park Mellor started the game at an electrifying pace. Scoring 5 goals to Wilmslow’s 0. Making the most of the sun being in the keeper’s eyes Mellor managed to score some good outside shots as well as some nice well worked goals from crease. After a convincing first quarter I think there were some who thought that Mellor would run up a big score. However, having to keep swapping players disrupted the momentum and with coach Watson keen to work on certain things like getting the ball behind, the goals slowed.
Mellor managed to add a couple more goals to their total and kept Wilmslow out in the most part. Robinson only being beaten by the sun (or so he was very quick to tell us). The score at half-time was 7-2.
The third quarter Mellor managed to turn on the style again scoring 4 without reply causing the score to be 11-2 at the break. This led to the players demanding changes: Robinson wanted the opportunity to get amongst the goals and Rogerson wanting to achieve his season ambition of playing better in an opposition shirt than a Mellor one. Whilst Coach Watson was reluctant at first to agree to these changes, thinking only one defender and a novice goal keeper might be a bit risky, he was ultimately swayed. Clearly the sun and being reunited with his long-lost Sheffield ex-coaching partner caused him to be in a good mood. So Mellor lined up in the final quarter with Jay in goal. Oli Rob in attack. And Oli Rog sporting a Wilmslow shirt.
Mellor failed to score in the final quarter, meaning Oli Rob didn’t manage to get his goal. The Wilmslow defenders seemed to recognise his threat and consequently kept tight to him. However, Wilmslow seemed to wake up in the final quarter led by Mellor’s own Oli Rog, scoring a goal and definitely seeming to enjoy playing in an opposition shirt (not for the first time this season!). With Wilmslow scoring and Mellor not looking like ever scoring again this led to some worried faces down the touchline and on the pitch but ultimately the 9 goal lead would prove to be unassailable.
Final Score: Mellor 11 – 7 Wilmslow
Goals: Jay (1) Rory (4) Cam (1) Ben S (2) Charlie (1) George (1)
A good performance by Mellor in a game where they were always in charge. A special mention for Connor who took to defending brilliantly, looking very comfortable with a long pole. It is worth noting that Jay doesn’t have a career ahead of him as a ‘keeper and Oli Rob by his own words doesn’t want to play outfield again.
Jack’s comment: The team clearly can play good lacrosse at times and look well organised and look like they have a lot of fun playing lacrosse. But the last 15minutes was quite possibly some of the most bizarre lacrosse I’ve seen for a while!!
