It's finally starting to feel like winter, being blessed with great weather all season, today would be the first time we wouldn't be. The wind was blowing and the temperature was edging ever closer to 0! The Mellor boys would line up against a much more inexperienced side in the form of Ashton. We had the luxury of having a substitute for only the second time this season, but unfortunately Ashton couldn't field a starting 10. Lending a player to the Ashton boys meant we could just about put an 8 a Side team together. This would cook up a not so tasteful game of lacrosse, yet strangely entertaining at times
Experienced showed at the face off, Mellor retaining possession with great ease and attacking the Ashton goal. Chances came fast but the Ashton keeper was on fine form, making several quick fire saves. This led to an Ashton attack where Ashton's no10 let lose a shot that surprised us all and Ashton would take the lead. Mellor were quick to respond when Josh Benson was found at the back post and neatly slotted the ball home to level the game. Ashton were showing resilience and only let in one more gaol meaning the score at the break would be 2-1 in favour of Mellor
At the break the Mellor boys were able to decide on some form of structure and transferred this into the game. From the face off the ball movement began to flow. The boys let the ball do the work, this fast paced ball movement was too much for the Ashton defence to handle and shots were being fired left right and centre. Will Moore was very active through the middle of the Ashton defence, some great off ball movement meant he was able to slot in his first goal for the season. This excited the Mellor attack and 6 unanswered goals were put into the Ashton goal before the whistle would blow for the half
At this point Oliver Rogerson swapped Mellor colours for Ashton's, making the game somewhat humorous. Rogerson certainly threw his weight around and Cameron Major was the first of many to stand up to him. This was like scenes from an African plane, Rogerson being the isolated elephant and the Lions clinging on to him. Rogerson's hearty performance in an Ashton shirt set up the 'parental revolution' where every boys parent who was spectating suddenly became Ashton fans, the cheers coming from the new Ashton supporters certainly spurred on their new club's defence. To the Mellor parents disappointment, Ashton were not able to penetrate through the Mellor defence giving a 3 quarter time score of 11-1
In the final quarter the Mellor boys decided to really upset their parents by scoring 4 quick fire goals past the fans favourite (and coaches favourite!) player. However the cheers led by Jon Heydon were not getting any quieter and Ashton's number 10 was able to feed off the supporters energy and score his second for the day. But the Mellor talent had already proved too much, Jay Learner was his usual self, skipping past players and setting up goals. Rory Heydon maintained his scoring record, despite a quieter game this weak. But he was the name everyone was mentioning later on in the day due to his fantastic performance in the men's B team. Defence was strong as ever and full of energy despite not having much to do. Final score 18-2 Mellor
A very different game of lacrosse this week but always good to have a win. Next game certainly won't be this easy so back to serious ways for the weekend.
Managers view of the game - Oli Rog played better in an Ashton shirt than he does for Mellor when Maisie is watching
Now I did find this to be very true. Oliver enjoyed the Aston shirt a bit too much, and certainly found a place in his heart for the Tameside club. However, we can use this to our advantage. All we need to do is ask Maisie to wear an Ashton shirt the next time she comes to support. Parents, as you are probably already aware, Ashton are away this weekend at Timperley. So could you please make sure you drop your kids off at brabyns before you head off for Altrincham?! I joke, see you all Saturday!!
