A though half term fixture facing up against one of the top teams in the lague, poynton A. With many people missing for poynton, most of their a team were playing on this day, leading to a much more competitive affair. Our own absences meant we called upon Matt Watson and Isaac Young to fill in the spots so we could field a side.
This game was set out to be a competitive one, and that it was! From the face off both teams went out in top gear, fighting for every ground ball out there. The game started physical and both teams experienced man up situations. Both defences were very strong and organised, the mellor defence looked confident with the return of Oli Robinson and for the first time three long poles. Poynton were finally able to break down the Mellor defence and slot the ball past oli from close range, who had already made 2 saves in the game. Mellor didn't enjoy long spells of possession in the first quarter, like they did last weak. The Poynton defence were awake from the start and weren't letting anything past, this doubled up with poor handling from all Mellor boys equalled a challenging first quarter in the attacking half of the pitch. First quarter 1-0 in favour of Poynton
The second quarter started started with Mellor retaining posession at the face and having some good spells infront of the Poynton goal, the defence however was very well organised, applying pressure at the right times and making the game tough for the Mellor boys. However, the boys were able to take advantage of this pressure and used the space created to dodge into, Jay Learner managed to swiftly beat his man and fire the ball precisely into the back of the Poynton goal. Poynton managed to match this though, a lack of communication and a man down situation led to Them squeezing ahead for the second time in the game. This didn't seem to get the Mellor boys down though. The very same situation appeared for Learner, some quick ball movement gave him the space to dodge again and put home the second Mellor goal. Half time score 2-2
Mellor were able to regroup, after a tough first half with no substitutes meant energy levels were drained. We used the full 10 minutes at the half to regenerate the energy seen in the first 2 quarters. The face off game was still strong and Rogerson was enjoying playing in the LSM role, hoovering up ground balls and distributing the ball efficiently to the Mellor attack. George Brady had been very energetic in the first half and this energy finally paid off for him. He managed to lose his marker and Leaner precisely found him, a quick fire finish put Brady on the scoresheet. But again Poynton were quick to reply, playing some very nice lacrosse they were able to put 2 more past the Mellor defence and regain their lead deservingly. 3rd quarter score 4-3 in favour of Poynton
4th quarter began with the fight even stronger from both teams, no one was backing down. However the quality in the Poynton attack let then double their 1 goal lead. However Mellor we're certainly not finished here. The sheer determination would finally reward the boys, and in the last 5 minutes Learner and Brady found the back of the net again. The game would eventually end as a draw, a fair result in the end. 5 a piece
The determination and effort made up for the more frequent Handling errors, should we tighten up this for the weekend, we will see some great lacrosse
Managers quote - Absolutely brilliant performance, first class effort, if only we had more girlfriends.
In my opinion, The girlfriend side of things didn't fully work for us this weekend. Oliver was clearly too up for this game, racking up a total of 4 minutes in personal fouls, one more minute would have seen him expelled for the game. The female encouragement is definitely helpful and is needed every week, however, emotions got the better of Oliver this week
Scorers: Jay Learner 5, George Brady 2
Saves: Oliver Robinson 8
Man of the match: close between Oli Rob and Jay, but it goes to Jay for his three goals and two assists
And finally, sorry for the lateness of this report! And thank you Huss and Julian for lending the players, who again look far from out of place. Great performance from the two of them
