The third game of the season saw the Mellor u16s go head to head with Cheadle. With some talented players the Mellor boys knew that it wasn't going to be a walkover. And it certainly wasn't. We were nearly back to a full strength side with our only absence being Charlie Tozer again
The game began with Mellor gaining possession at the face, and holding the ball well. The boys looked comfortable in possession and were moving the ball around nicely. Some good off ball movement up top allowed Josh Benson to squeeze past his man and slot the ball in the back of the net. Cheadle didn't see much of the ball in the first quarter, 2-0 at the break due to a nice dodge and finish from Jay Learner.
Second quarter began the same with Mellor dominant at the face. However the off ball movement began to slow down, the boys got caught in possession and the Kingsway club enjoyed some good spells of possession, however the Mellor defence was as organised as ever, and also very vocal. Cheadle struggled to find a good shape which allowed the defence to cover each other easily. When shots were taken Oli Robinson was able to pull off some nice saves and Mellor attacked on the break, half time score 4-1
The third quarter began much the same again. Strong at the face off and good ground ball fighting from Will Moore and Rory Heydon. A well organised dodging move initiated from Heydon allowed Mellor to squeeze ahead even more. However the Mellor attack became static and therefore lost possession quite easily. Cheadle took advantage of this and managed to score 2 more goals. Oliver Rogerson turned up with an eye for goal, a powerful run up the pitch allowed him to squeeze off a shot that was let in by the keeper, third quarter ended 6-3
Fourth quarter began with another powerful run from Rogerson, but this time he pulled off a good stop, bouncing high into the roof of the net. The boys turned on the off ball movement again which allowed Learner to dodge and take a shot, George Brady occupying his man well causing the Cheadle slide to come late. Brady was busy all game on the crease and caused the Cheadle defence problems when it came to sliding.
A better all round performance from the boys, but with still plenty of things to work on.
