Mellor u16's started the 2014/2015 season with the long away trip to Rochdale. With the absences of key players the team called on Mathew Watson and Alex Hewetson to step up from the u14's, Thank you for playing!
The game began at a fast pace, with Mellor seemingly struggling at the face-off. Rochdale enjoyed good spells of possession in the first quarter but couldn't seem to break down the organised Mellor defence. the Yorkshire boys looked comfortable in possession and managed to squeeze a few shots off, only to be saved by the Mellor keeper Oliver Robinson. Robinson looked sharp between the pipes pulling off some nice saves and allowing the Mellor boys to attack on the break. The Mellor attack was lead by Rory Heydon who looked strong on the ball and allowed Mellor to take the lead. 1st quarter ended 3-1 to the longhurst lane club
The second quarter started somewhat better from Mellor who were enjoying more spells in possession thanks to the strong groundball game from face-off coming from Will Moore and Cameron Major. The straight attack were showing good off ball movement, with good energy from George Brady. Josh Benson showed good strength on the ball and was proving too difficult to handle from the Dale's defence beating his man numerous times and putting a couple of shots past the Rochedale keeper. However the Mellor boys struggled to keep possession at times, with the Rochdale defence applying pressure and forcing turnovers. Second quarter ended 5-2 in favour of red.
The physically strong Rochdale side came out fighting in the second half and slowly began to break down the opposition. Some lazy defending allowed Rochdale's number 7 to squeeze home a couple of goals. The unforced errors in Mellor's attack were proving costly as the Mellor midfield began to tire. the 3rd quarter ended with a strong outside shot from Ben Smallman which just crossed the line as the whistle blew for the break. 3rd quarter 6-4
The fourth Quarter saw the whole Mellor squad become more lively. The defence were loud thanks to Louis Font and Robinson again. Alex Hewetson looked very strong in the defence and wasn't fazed by the physical aspect of the game. Mathew Watson also looked strong on the ball in the last quarter, beating his man and firing a nice bounce shot passed the Rochdale keeper. Dale also came out fighting scoring immediately after the Mellor goal and momentum looked like it was swinging towards the Rochdale team. However, the talent in the Mellor attack was strong, Some great fighting from Moore helped Mellor keep the ball in a Rory Heydon lead attack, Major helped organise the attacking set up which allowed the boys to score 3 more goals.
Final score 9-5. Goals coming from: Heydon(3) Benson(2) Smallman(1) Watson(1) Brady(1) Major(1)
