Under heavy skies the U14s took on a battling Sheffield side in a hard fought match that Mellor were always in control of but with the final score line possibly flattering them slightly. With 7 players either rested or injured the face off duties mainly fell to Toby who performed admirably.
In the first quarter Mellor took an early 3-0 lead but Sheffield fought back to finish the quarter 4-2 to Mellor with goals from the usual suspects of Josh, Finn, George and Jack.
The second quarter saw Mellor extend their lead including goals from James P and James K with good running from Jamie and James S. Noah, Robbie and James had their work cut out in defence as Sheffield’s Nos. 10 & 21 kept them busy with the half ending 9-4 to Mellor.
With persistent rain not dampening the spirits of the good sized crowd, now fed with bacon butties, Mellor pressed their lead with another 4 goals and only one in reply.
Good runs from Jake Fell culminating in a goal in the final quarter and nice cuts and passing from Miles helped to ensure that Mellor won every quarter with a final score of 17-6.Thanks to the coaches, refs, cooks and spectators who will hopefully have dried out by now.
Well done to Sheffield for making it across the Pennines and particular thanks to those Mellor parents who gave their support despite their son’s absence from the team due to injury or being rested.Next up: Norbury Away
