In big games, against big teams, we can always win - when we all turn up. Today we didnt, so we lost - Simple as that. Thankfully Stockport werent at their best either so a hiding was spared in what both teams agreed was a messy game.
Josh opened the scoring for Mellor early in the first quarter with an assist from Jamie. This was soon followed by a great solo effort from Oli who made a magnificent run and found the back of the net. Stockport responded well and soon got on the score line themselves. The first frantic quarter ended with Mellor 2 -1 up.
Stockport came out fighting in the second quarter and some good defending from Mellor managed to limit the damage. Ned also made a number of good saves. It was still not enough and Stockport scored 5 times in this quarter. Jack Royal scored to keep Mellor in it and the quarter ended Stockport 6 – 3 up.
Some good goalkeeping in the third quarter meant that Mellor only conceded 2 more goals. Josh pulled another one back for Mellor following a scrummage near the Stockport goal and the final quarter started with Mellor 4 goals behind.
The Mellor spirit kept the boys fighting hard until the end of the game and two more hard won goals equalled those scored by Stockport in this quarter. A hard game for Mellor with a depleted squad but the boys did well to keep the goal difference down.
Credit goes to Ned who was back to his best in goals, Ollie, who played through a full on cold to put in another man of the match performance, Jamie, debutising in midfield and linking up our defence, Joey, majestic as ever and Toby& Will who carried out his jobs brilliantly as usual.
The big question at training on Sunday - were you a worker or a shirker? They all know their own answer so I'm sure we'll see a return to "Good Old Mellor" come match day - which is also the next round of the Cup at Heaton Mersey
