On a cold and breezy morning, the second game of the season started with a goal from Rochdale in just a few seconds following the face off. Wow! Not a great start for the Mellor boys who quickly “woke up” and responded with some creative passing and a great goal by George assisted by Jamie.
Mellor continued to face stiff opposition and Rochdale’s number 16 made a great long run with her long pole passing a number of Mellor players to score Rochdale’s second. Mellor scored three more times in this first quarter with goals from Josh, Jamie and Jack to put the boys at a 4-2 advantage at the end of quarter 1.
Rochdale started the second quarter looking much stronger in defence but George broke the deadlock with a great solo effort. Ned stopped any attempt from Rochdale to score in this quarter and it ended Mellor 9 Rochdale 2
With the Mellor Boys now opening up a comfortable lead a great goal behind his back from Rochdale’s number six showed them that they couldn’t get too complacent and they duly responded with a number of goals from George, Jake and Oli. Another couple of goals for Rochdale took the game into last quarter with Mellor 12 – 5 in front.
The Mellor defence remained strong and Ned made some more great saves with Rochdale picking up only one more goal in the last quarter. Mellor were taking no prisoners and picked up a further 5 and when the final whistle blew they had opened up a good 13 goal lead.
The Rochdale Team gave a really good, spirited performance with a limited number of players. Great sportsmanship form the Mellor boys who were loaned throughout to make up numbers, made for a game that was more even than the score line would suggest.
