A yoyo game with the pendulum eventually swinging our way in a close and competitive final

Finals are meant to be high quality, end to end, nail biting etc - this one had all of those and more!

Two teams, who are in many ways are a mirror image of each other, with lots of technically good individuals who play with determination and as a real team served up a treat for the early risers at the Wembley of lacrosse.

The first quarter wasn't the best for Mellor with Cheadle dominating possession and after hardly touching the ball in the first 10 mins we found ourselves 2-0 down. The coaches asked for more pressure to be put on their players and for us to lock off their spare players - this worked straight away as we gained some possession and a goal from Tom led to a 1-2 Qtr deficit.

As the sun came out in Qtr 2 we played some wonderful lacrosse and defended strongly. Joe was winning us the face and the tempo in mid and attack went up a few notches. All of our players carried a goal threat and the movement, passing and finishing abilities by the whole team led to 6 goals in the qtr with Tom, Sam and Eddie bagging 2 each. Cheadle replied with 2 goals but the signs were looking good at 7-4.

The 3rd qtr was were we won (and then almost lost!) the game. 3 more unanswered goals saw us take a 10-4 lead and it looked like we had Cheadle on the ropes. However, good teams and players don't lie down and Cheadle made us wobble showing speed and strength to score 4 quick unanswered goals as we ended the qtr 10-8.

When it became 10-9 in the final qtr the boys could have crumbled. But this team of brothers rally together when times are tough and rather than go to pieces they raised there game with an Eddie screamer and a Tom dodge to put us 12-9 up. Game management was then asked for by the coaches and delivered to perfection and whilst there was a Cheadle goal it was much too late to change the result -- 12-10 to Mellor.

4 year 9's, 4 year 8's and 4 year 7's - the youngest of the 10 u14s squads - had finished the season with silverware and played some fantastic lacrosse to watch - a wonderful effort by all the boys and the coaches who have led them superbly this year.
