Mellor prove too strong as the boys ease to victory.

Facing a team with a similar age profile to ours this was going to be an interesting match.

Mellor started the game with intent, and were passing the ball with much more purpose than last week, forcing their keeper into a number of good saves. After some average attempts at finishing, a Tom pass saw George weave his way through on goal and slot home. Ned was then called into action at the other end and strong checking from Alex, Joe and Will limited Timperley in attack. Just before the end of the 1st qtr, Josh then scored the first of his 3 on the day with a great finish as we ended 2-0 up.

The 2nd quarter started in a similar way to the first except this time our shooting was getting better as we began to finish off some really good flowing moves with goals from Sam, Joey, Jamie and George and assists from Eddie and Oli. The only blip was when Ned got mugged (not literally, of course!) but with our defenders watching on in silence the Timperley attacker came from behind, stole the ball and finished to give them their first goal. Better to learn from your mistakes when you have a big lead though. Half time 6-1.

The 3rd quarter started with Tom getting the first of his 2 and further goals from Joey, Sam and George saw us race into a 10-1 lead. Timperely looked like with only 10 players they were running out of steam. We could and should have scored even more goals and this was the only time in the match when we became sloppy and started doing the opposite of what had got us into the lead and what the coaches were asking for. Some poor shooting technique choices, losing our shape in attack and trying to beat one man too many, when a simple pass was on, saw us squander many further opportunities. Sam then transferred over to Timperley, as they had gone down to 9, and they then they put together a nice passing move to pull it back to 10-2 at the end of the 3rd.

The 4th qtr saw us carry on dominating possession, with Joe and George being very effective at face today, and further good lacrosse led to goals from Tom, Josh (2) and Jamie plus one in reply led to a final 14-3 victory.

We hadn’t seen Timperley at their best today, or at full strength, so we’ll take the win but know we can’t be complacent should we meet them in bigger games this season. Many pluses though - our defence is looking good, with all 3 boys playing well and Ned routinely making good saves. In attack we have lots of goals in us and Josh’s 3 today were probably the highlight and just reward for all his hard work in recent weeks. If the team continues to work hard and play in the way the coaches want then we’ll give ourselves a fighting chance against the best in the league this season. The boys, parents and coaches all came away happy – especially when the chip butties arrived!

Goals: Josh (3), George (3), Jamie (2), Joey (2), Sam (2), Tom (2). Assists from all the mid and attack. Ned - lots of saves and the defence many great checks.
