A poor start but a performance which gives hope that we can compete with the best this season.

Poynton came to play…and they did!

We knew this was going to be a tough game and it definitely played out that way in the first quarter which saw Mellor struggle with superior passing and handling from the Poynton boys. The Mellor boys didn’t look too lively and the first passage of play was marked by a number of missed checks, dropped balls and poor ground ball. Equally, Poynton looked sharp and any shots we had were saved by their excellent keeper (who is also the Stockport Metros keeper). Our own goalie, Ned made a brace of saves to keep the score down to 0-5 at the end of first quarter time.

The second quarter started much better for us and Eddie put our first goal away 5 minutes into the quarter. This was followed by good shots from Sam, Jamie and Tom all of which came close and there was definitely a surge of passion and renewed fight coming from the Mellor team. A goal from Sam after 10 minutes brought the score back to 2-5 and we looked like we could come back strong. After another from Poynton, the score was 2-6 going into half time but we had won the quarter.

The boys came out fighting for the start of the third quarter and it looked like we had a game on our hands. A quick goal from George after a great pick up and flick from Jamie took it to 3-6. Then Poynton stepped up and scored a couple more but we managed to return a couple which included Josh getting his first of the season - a powerful shot and a great goal. Tom also scored to close of the third quarter at 6-8 and it was all looking a lot tighter. Could Mellor come back and win this in the end ?

The final quarter started a little slower than the third had finished but still saw Poynton score 4 more for no reply and all of a sudden at 6-12 it looked like it might be slipping away for Mellor. Despite the goals, Ned had been having a great game and was saving far more than he was conceding and there were good shots missed from both Sam and George. The boys did score two more in the final quarter, which included one from Tom and a superb diving goal from George but we didn’t really look like we could catch Poynton at that point and the match ended with the score at 8-14.

All in all a mixed performance but not one to be down about – Poynton are a much older side than our current Under 14s and they played some lovely lacrosse today….but so can we on our day. Let’s get back to that standard next week!
