The Mellor boys did the club proud today battling to a highly creditable runners up spot against some tough opposition in a 10 team tournament.
Despite an opening 6-4 defeat to a team playing under a Stockport name (albeit bolstered by a number of Brooklands players), Mellor bounced back in emphatic style to beat Sheffield 11-1 (knowing that goal difference could prove crucial, no mercy was shown). The next game was against a very strong Cheadle team containing a number of Metro's players and in a high standard game, it finished 3-3. Mellor now faced Timperely, knowing that only a win would be enough to progress. A 3-1 victory ensured a nervous wait to see if Mellor had finished in the top 4 - we had, just.
The reward however was a semi final against the unbeaten team on the day Cheadle Hulme, also unbeaten in the league and the team that had heavily beaten Mellor in an 8 a side game at the start of the season. Mellor had nothing to lose as for once we were not expected to win. However, the boys seemed to relish this and were physically up for the challenge, dominating many of the 50:50's. This led to Mellor dominating posession and with their finishing at a high level won 5-2.
The final was to be against Stockport again who had defeated a strong Wilmslow team in the other semi final. Strangely both teams seemed to respect each other too much and the game was at a walking pace for the first few mins, Mellor scoring first before they equalised. The second half started strongly for Mellor who took a 2-1 lead and it looked as though it could be our day again. However, Stockport threw caution to the wind and upped the tempo creating a number of shooting opportunities which they took. In the end Mellor just ran out of steam and had to settle for runners up.
All the players should be proud of their performance today against what were often physically bigger opponents who were more suited to the short pitches that we were. Well played boys.
