With our ever increasing injury list this weeks cup game could have gone either way. Goalie Will Macdonald was out with a broken thumb so Daniel Jones stepped in between the posts. This along with a couple of new players in the team and key midfielders missing or playing out of position made for a disjointed Mellor line up.
The game started slowly with Mellor struggling to string passes together and made hard work of the first quarter lead of 2-1. The 2nd quarter started well with Ben Mochan taking a number of chances from his favoured crease position to slot home 2 goals before half time which along with a couple of long range efforts from Josh Poke made for a comfortable half time score line of 7-1.
Things seemed to settle down in the 2nd half and Mellors win never looked in doubt. New boy Will Tadman has settled in well and Matty Thomas who was back after injury was making his first appearance of the season was also in the thick of the action. Sheffield struggled to clear their half and when they did were quickly turned over by Mellors superior defence with Nick Hughes marshalling things at the back.
While the score line of 14-3 makes for good reading the performance will have to improve if Mellor have aspirations of lifting this years Junior Cup.
Big thanks to Oli Rodgerson for coaching todays team.
