TIMPERLEY 5 – MELLOR 11
The last game before Christmas and Mellor U14s were playing their old rivals Timperley. Numbers were depleted and there were no subs on the Mellor side so all the boys had to put in a good performance throughout the game. They did just that. For the first time in a while they looked like they were playing as a team. The astro-turf at Timperley is always a good test for teams and Mellor came through that test well.
The first quarter couldn’t have started better. Mellor scored straight from the face-off and were pinging the ball around expertly. The good passing and unselfish play re-enforced their dominance and they quickly made it 2-0 and then 3-0. With the amount of possession they had Mellor should have scored more. Timperley got over their initial lethargy and by the end of the quarter they were making problems for the Mellor defence. However, the defence stayed strong and Will made some good stops at the back. Timperley were forced to shoot from a long way out which also helped. In the second quarter Mellor took their foot off the pedal but still made it to halftime with the scores at a good looking 5-0
In the second half Timperley started to pull their game together. An early goal gave them confidence and although Mellor’s response was swift you got the feeling that Timperley were playing for more than just pride. Mellor started tiring and making small errors on the lively surface and by the end of the third quarter Timperley had pulled back to 9-2. Mellor got a bit of their fight back in the final quarter with Drew, Dan, Joe and Josh Poke all making their mark. Tiredness and lapses in concentration allowed Timperley to slip in another three times but the result never looked in doubt. Mellor ran out worthy winners. If they can continue to play as a team like this they needn’t fear anyone.
