The opposition, incorporating Wilmslow and Cheadle players, was always going to be an unknown quantity, but they had the appearance of a strong team. In a characteristically high paced move, Mellor attacked from the face-off win The result was the game’s opening goal from Matt Watson, well within the first minute. Mellor’s positive start created opportunities for both strong attacking play and for the defensive unit of Ben Mochan, Josh Poke and Isaac Young, to show their strength and keep Wilmslow at a safe distance. A superb run from Alex Hewitson converted a defensive move into an attack which concluded with a shot from Dan Jones, close but no second goal yet. Resulting play from that shot, however, did result in a goal from Alex Hewitson. Mellor continued to look the most threatening team in a quarter that saw end-to-end play and significant stretches of Wilmslow possession. It was the follow-on play after a shot from Elliot Bickerton went out of bounds that resulted in another goal from Matt Watson - Mellor now 3-0 up. The scoreline at this point wasn’t reflective of Wilmslow’s time in possession but their first goal only came with about a minute of the quarter left to play. Mellor's response to that was almost instant, a powerful shot from Elliott Bickerton at the whistle saw the first quarter end with Mellor up 4-1.
Mellor started the second quarter as they’d ended the first, with several shots worrying the Wilmslow goalkeeper. A defensive turnover from Isaac Young and his pass out to Martin Benfold ended with a Dan Jones goal assisted by Josh Simpson-Pink - Mellor’s fifth. Wilmslow’s possession was still proving fruitless in the final third as the Mellor defence exposed no weaknesses for them to exploit. A Wilmslow timeout was called which generated a positive response from their players and more questions were asked of the Mellor defence. Several Wilmslow shots were fired in, but many barely troubling Dan Pawsey. To their credit, Wilmslow still managed sustained periods of possession but the defence with Dan Pawsey restricted their goal tally down to one, the half ending with an Elliot Bickerton shot saved by the Wilmslow keeper.
The third quarter began with Mellor 5-2 up. A behind-the-back trick shot from Elliot Bickerton, a move that had worked well in previous games, unluckily fell to the opposition and afforded Wilmslow an attacking break. However, the attack was ended abruptly by a defensive turnover from Josh Poke who’s pass ended with a goal from Joe Hussey making it 6-2. Some uncharacteristic unforced errors from Mellor gave Wilmslow some unexpected opportunities but Wilmslow were only able to fully take advantage of one. This quarter saw long periods of Mellor possession, several great moves and patient attacks ultimately bringing Mellor two further goals, one from Josh Simpson-Pink and the other from Dan Jones, the quarter ending 8-3.
The final quarter saw plenty of high quality play from Mellor with attempts on goal flying in thick and fast - a shot from Elliot Bickerton after an excellent interception, followed by shots from Dan Jones and Josh Simpson-Pink. From a clearance, Wilmslow took advantage of the breaking play, bringing the score to 8-4. Nick Hughes and Rory Fell continued to disrupt the Wilmslow defence with great positioning, and Wilmslow were now beginning to struggle to even get out of their own half. The pass from a Wilmslow offside foul created some great passing play that concluded in Mellor’s 9th from Elliot Bickerton. Mellor sustained the pressure and the final moments saw Dan Jones make two interceptions both resulting in threatening Mellor attacks. Wilmslow burst to life in the dying moments of the game and managed one more goal bringing the final scoreline to 9-5. Mellor continue their winning streak.
