The first game of the 2013/14 season saw the visit of Brooklands to Brabyns park and both sides treated everyone to an enjoyable and highly competitive game of lacrosse, with Brooklands ultimately triumphing 7-12.
The game was incredibly tight in the first three quarters with neither side able to sneak more than a couple of goals in front before being pegged back. The lead was constantly changing hands. Unfortunately, in the end Brooklands' extra energy in the final quarter, thanks to them having 11 players to Mellor's 10, enabled them to run away with the game slightly, leaving the score line flattering Brooklands a little.
There were some great goals scored by both sides, matched by some great saves from some quite inexperienced 'keepers on both teams! As the game progressed, and the summer rust came off, Mellor begin to look more like a team with some nice assisted goals in addition to some great individual efforts.
The defence and everyone in the team stood up well to the physical challenge Brooklands posed and it was great to see the younger players, who were making their under 14 debut, prepared to rush into ground balls and dodge on their big guys.
A very positive display overall but, unfortunately we now have no game till the 5th October when we will be eagerly awaiting our trip to Timperley.
