After 35 days since the defeat to Stockport, the u12s were able to put that result firmly into the past, give their new xmas pressies a run out and get the bit between their teeth in this impressive cup win.
As is becoming a bit of a habit, a slow start for both teams, made it look like things were going to much closer than anyone would have liked, both teams feeling each other out and it took a while for the game to settle. In fact a Timperley goal was the spark needed and that lit the Mellor team into action. Finishing the 1st quarter scoring 5 goals without reply and some of them goals really very pleasing on the eye.
A sluggish start in the 2nd quarter had the coaches somewhat concerned that Timperely were not here to be rolled over, as they crept back into the tie and brought the score to 5-3, tempers between the side lines got a little bit 'shouty' but thankfully good order was regained and Mellor's better all round play saw them end the 1st half 8-3 ahead.
After half time, Mellor's good play continued and the score line widened to 14-4 by the end of the 3rd quarter. It all sounds like a bed of roses, but there continues to be plenty for all concerned to go away and work on, ground balls, catching, throwing, shooting low...all sound familiar?!
The score line did allow us some grace to start using our very healthy and eager squad to get some match time, and allowed us to move the players into positions they don't often get the chance to play.
The fourth quarter played out with more overall dominance from Mellor and the end score line of 17-6 a fair indicator of the match.
An impressive performance from all the squad but far from perfect. A couple of shout outs to Hayden in goal, who made some very good saves in goal and his distribution was by far his best so far this season. Also to Freddie W, who bagged 8 of Mellor's goals, by doing what we ask week in week out...shooting low!!
