A windy February winters day at Mellor was host to a top of the table clash with Timperley. Mellor had won one league game to Timperleys two and Timperley took bragging rights in the cup game so this was Mellor’s chance to even things up and cement the league standings.
As the first quarter began it was clear that the cup defeat had stung Mellor and they were in no mood to be benevolent to their visitors. A number of shots rattled the Timperley goal and a number of good saves from their keeper kept it even until Finn fed Miles P and he scored from close range. Mellor were up and running, looking sharp until a familiar burst and shot by Timperley no 56 levelled the game. Sound familiar? 1-1
A re-group after the first quarter and more attention to the oppositions midfield danger men paid dividends. Mellor put their foot firmly on the accelerator with a flurry of unreplied goals. Sammy, Miles P, Eddie and James K sharing the honours. The Timperley players looked more and more frustrated as the midfield chasing by Charlie, Finn and Theo was backed up by some fine strength and checking from the “three amigos” at the back. On the few occasions they shot on goal a flick of the wrist from Fredrick saw it snuffed out. (He even managed a goal assist with a great clear after a save!) 7-1
More domination followed in Q3 as Ellis wriggled free from 5 defenders to set up Sammy for a cool finish. Sammy added another with some fine footwork, a body roll and shot. Finn was dominant at the face off and from this Mellor added two more goals quickly through Sammy and Miles P. Timperley got one back at the end of the quarter but it finished 10-3.
The final quarter saw more adventure from Mellor as runs from Robbie and a snaking run from James S set up two more goals for Sammy. James S managed to run the length of the pitch, drop the ball and nearly score with a left footed curler! (wrong game smith!) Eddie added the gloss with the final goal of the match. Even a Timperley goal in the final quarter couldn’t disguise Mellor’s dominance.
Overall a very well deserved win. The Defence were very solid and physical when needed, Ollie picking up some great groundballs in particular. The midfield never shirked, did all the hard yards and Finn, Ellis and Eddie were able to slow the game, be patient and control the pace. Mellor lost Theo and Miles Q to illness and injury but the tireless offensive running by Charlie, James K, Miles P, Jacob and Seb made up for it.
Final Score 13-3.
Solid, aggressive, patient and controlled. They’ll sleep well tonight!
