Spirited performance by Sheffield but Mellor eased to victory

The windy route across the Pennines left some of the boys looking Cheadle green upon arrival in Yorkshire, however they left Sheffield with a good win under their belts, full of Mellor flair.

The game started with referee Andy laying down an early marker, sending his own son to the sin-bin after only 10 seconds! The mood of the away supports was further challenged as Sheffield secured the first goal of the game. But this was perhaps a false dawn as they didn’t score again until the second half, as Mellor stepped up their efforts, beavering away to take the battle to the opposition. Goals from Charlie Hodgson, Finn Howie, James Kennedy and Seb Ogley saw Mellor lead 4-1 at the end of Q1.

Four unanswered goals in the second quarter took Mellor to 8-1 at half time, with goals from Miles Plant, James K and two from Eddie Liles. Our ever-assured defence of Robbie Wilson, James Smith and Ollie Bielecki, keeping the Sheffield wolves from the door with a shut-out quarter.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first. Mellor didn’t give Sheffield any uncontested time with the ball, badgering their every possession and breaking rapidly at any opportunity. The third quarter was won 8-1 as Mellor collected goals with the intensity of a squirrel anticipating winter. Sammy Chalmers netted two following powerful runs, out-foxing the defence, whilst Finn (2), Miles (2), Eddie and James K all bagging goals, whilst Ellis Booy also scored with what is now becoming his signature move, a backwards over-the-head looping shot into the top corner.

The last quarter was won 5-1 by Mellor to take the final score to 3-21. Sammy capped a man-of-the-match performance with two more goals in what was surely his most assured performance of the season. Eddie, Miles and Charlie also added to their earlier goals. There were also assists from Robbie and Theo Crowther during the quarter, whilst keeper Fredrick Jenkins even soared down the field like an eagle sweeping out of its nest, with two late runs.

Whilst this was a thumping win, full credit should go to Sheffield who never gave up. Extra praise goes to their keeper who was undoubtedly their man-of-the-match, saving time and time again, giving what was probably the best keeping performance we’ve seen against us this season.

As for Mellor, this was another strong team performance. Our goals once again came from all over the pitch, as illustrated by eight different boys getting on the score sheet and assists from seven of the team. Next week may present a bigger challenge, but with goals a plenty and an assure defence, we shouldn’t fear anyone this season.
