Mellor started well, winning a foul from the first face off and taking the lead through Miles P. The pattern of the game was established in the first quarter, strong tight well organised defence from each team made it difficult for either side to score, and as a result, midfielders and attackers tended to keep much of the position as they probed for openings. Another goal from Ellis and one from Cheadle meant Mellor ended a tight first quarter slightly on top, leading 2-1.
The second quarter started and the pattern was repeated, as in the first quarter the game remained close with Mellor scoring twice, through Miles P and Charlie, to Cheadle’s one. So, Mellor leading 4-2 at half time. The third quarter was again won by Mellor, with two goals from Charlie to make his hat trick and one from Eddie, with Cheadle responding twice, meant it was 7-4 to Mellor going into the last quarter. Into the final quarter, two more from Eddie also for his hat trick was answered by two goals from Cheadle, making it a final score of 9-6 to Mellor.
Overall a tight game with a well deserved victory for the home side, although In truth Mellor should probably have had a couple more goals, with some nice moves either concluding with wayward shooting or some good stops from the Cheadle keeper. Both defensives played well, with Robbie in particular leading from the back, and it was interesting to watch the attackers keeping possession and looking to find cracks in the respective backlines.
