Two large squads faced off today, with Timperley looking the physically bigger side by far and this showed from the off with Mellor struggling at face and the game could have easily got away from us in the first quarter, but for a series of great saves from Fredrick who kept the damage to just three goals to Timperley with two goals in reply from Charlie H and Miles P in the first quarter.
With hindsight we probably lost the game in the second quarter as Timperley stepped up a gear took 5 goals with no reply from Mellor. We didn’t help ourselves with some very wayward passing under pressure and despite a battling performance from Robbie and James in particular in defence we finished the second quarter 8-2 down.
Third quarter saw us regain some composure in possession and we moved the ball very well with a series of goals from Ellis, Miles P (2), Charlie H and Fin. When we moved the ball into our attackers we looked likely to score on most occasions and Timperley struggled to contain us, with just two goals in reply to our 5, taking us to 10-7 with Mellor looking capable of overturning the deficit.
Timperley again stepped up a notch in the fourth quarter and we struggled at times to move the ball out of defence and we finished 15-11.
Timperley looked the stronger team for much of the game but the boys played really well and we were in no way over-shadowed by a bigger team and despite the fact that we didn’t win any of the face offs. A little more composure in possession and picking our passes could have easily closed the gap and credit to our defence who played with real energy and commitment. Hopefully as the season progresses and our passing improves throughout the team we can realistically expect to win these sorts of games.
Well done boys.
