Magic first quarter lays foundation for convincing win

The sun was shining on a glorious autumnal day as Mellor U12 boys recorded a convincing win in their first home fixture vs Stockport. They were supported by a surprisingly good turnout from the parents despite the lure of the Ryder cup, with Will K’s dodgy 4G connection a poor substitute for sitting in front of the goggle box.

On to the action, Stockport were first into their stride as they scored straight from face-off. This was an early wake-up call that spurred the Mellor boys into action who hit back quickly with goals Charlie (first quarter hat trick!), Robbie, with a typical barnstorming run, Ellis and debutante Cameron to put the home side up 6 -1 by quarter time.

The second quarter was much more even, with goals from Josh and Miles Q helping Mellor to edge it 2 -1. Mellor defended well despite their key lynch pin, Robbie, spending time in the bin despite claiming he was only trying to put a friendly arm around one of the Stockport players.

The third quarter again was fairly even, with Mellor just edging it 3 – 2, with goals from Finn, Theo and Eddie. Much of the quarter was spent with less full teams with both having a number of players sent to the bin. Mellor will be pleased that they capitalised when up against only eight Stockport players with a well worked goal.

The final quarter again was close, with Mellor winning 4 -3. Goals were from Eddie, Charlie, Ellis and Finn, with a special mention for Ellis who scored a stunning backwards over the head goal which surely will be a contender for goal of the season.

Great second game with fantastic contributions from across the team with some lovely well worked team goals and a solid strong defence from Frederick, Ollie, James S, and Robbie, all of whom had to contend with a very dynamic and excellent Stockport no.4 in particular.

Particular thanks to Angus and Cornelia for kitchen duties and the chap with the clipboard for ensuring all logistics ran smoothly, despite barracking from various unnamed parents!
