Home against Heaton Mersey

After a night of rain and under heavy skies the U12 boys congregated on Mellor School’s pitch.
Had this been the Grand National the going would have been described as soft/heavy!
Match reporter: Angus.

A good natured turnout both on and off the pitch were graced with a fairly dry morning as the game got underway with virgin ref Matt Halls under the steady(ish) wing of Fred (‘The Ref’).

Mellor lost the initial face off and a physical quarter got underway with the majority of possession and territory for Heaton Mersey.
Despite this dominance of possession it was first blood to Mellor with great work from Jack Royle assisting for Eddie Lyles, and Finn Howie for Jack to take a 2 goal lead in the 1st quarter with 3 saves from Fredrick keeping a clean sheet for Mellor
Great running from both Jake Fell and Sammy Chalmers, good shooting from Noah plus Toby’s sublime pass to Eddie to shoot just over ensured an entertaining quarter for the amassed crowd before Anne Donavan supplied the bacon in her soft white baps.

The next quarter saw better possession for Mellor with goals for Finn, Eddie (with Noah assisting both) and a cracker from Toby who ran almost the full length of the pitch before slotting home.
However despite good defensive work from Jack Latham and Robbie Wilson plus further saves from Freddie, Heaton Mersey scored 2 goals to make the half time score 5 – 2.

The 3rd quarter saw further goals from Jack and Finn with assists by Noah and Jake plus good work from Miles and James winning the quarter 2-1 with the score at a comfortable 7-3 at the final break.

The last quarter was nerve-wracking as Heaton Mersey closed the gap to 7-5 before Jack’s goal well assisted by Ellis gave Mellor breathing space and great relief to the home crowd before Heaton Mersey got a consolation to make the final score 8-6 to Mellor. Another great run from Toby should have led to another goal but Heaton Mersey’s keeper did well again to deny Mellor a greater margin of victory.

It was a fantastic game played in great spirit between two good sides.

Next up Cheadle away!

Cheers
Angus
