Mellor hit the ground running from the first whistle today and played some great team lacrosse. The tone was set when George beat a couple of defenders and fed Jamie who, with a clinical finish, bagged Mellor’s first goal. Soon after it was 2 when a Sam feed to Eddie who scored the first of his many goals (today he was lethal in front of goal with his new pair of gloves!). The first quarter saw as good an attacking performance from the whole team as we have seen for a long time. Every player seemed to be finding the right pass, moving into space and finishing clinically. 6 different scorers and 5 different assists summed up the great attacking display from the team as Mellor built an 8-1 lead.
The defence were also playing their part by turning over the Timperley ball and then quickly setting up the first wave of attack by strong running from Joe, Joey, Alex, Toby and good feeds to the midfield and attack meaning Mellor were able to find space and fully exploit it, with great running from Archie and Ollie.P, as the goals continued to flow with Tom (2), Eddie (2), Jamie and Ollie H all finishing well to give Mellor a 14-1 half time lead.
The 3rd quarter was a bit more scrappy and whilst Mellor always looked in control, with Ned making a couple of good saves, the goals dried up somewhat as only 2 more from Sam and Eddie to make it 16-1. However the final quarter saw another goal feast as Mellor scored a further 8 unanswered goals from around the team to win 24-1.
As a build up to the cup semi final next week, this was a performance that should give confidence to the whole team. Next week will be tough, as we know from this stage last year, the boys will need to be 100% committed and continue to play quick pass and move lacrosse as well as defend strongly and as a unit. Let’s hope Mellor leave Stockport with 2 teams in their cup finals next week, as the U16s are also there, to reach our 4th consecutive Onondaga cup final.
Goals: Eddie (8), Tom (5), Ollie H (4), Sam (3) , Jamie (2), George (2), Assists – Sam and George lots but special mention to Alex and Josh.M for their assists today.
