This has always been a potential cup final and Poynton have some great players across their team – on paper, it’s an even match and this was tight from start to end.
Mellor started well with lots of possession with Sam testing them early on before a deflected goal gave Poynton a 1-0 lead. Eddie & Jamie, alongside George, were tough in the challenges and some patient play saw Sam score to bring us level. A soft goal saw us finish Q1 trailing 2 – 1. It was one of many more to come.
From the off, quarter 2 was better. A great solo run by George saw an effort from Eddie and, with increasing pressure Sam drew us level again. More great work from George saw a cool finish from Jamie although Poynton’s time out them saw them back level at 3 – 3 before they sneaked another brace of goals. Unfortunately we’re still a team of 2 halves. Whilst a number of the boys play with real conviction we’ll get found out by teams such as Poynton until all of the boys play with some aggression and grit and this really showed today.
Sam scored another pair of goals before we conceded again, and again. At 7 – 5 down, Tom found his touch and scored 2 quick goals as the score levelled yet again.
No doubt that we missed Joey today although Toby had another really solid game. Hopefully, with Archie’s speed and Ollie Hague’s touch we’ll be able to deal better with strong opposition in the future but we need to stop relying on half a dozen players to do all of the work for the team.
Goals from George and Tom saw us finish the 3rd Quarter with a 2 goal lead, something that we’re usually good at protecting. Unfortunately though Poynton simply wanted to win more and put far more effort in during the final quarter. The result ? 3 goals for no reply and, to be honest, a well-deserved win for them.
So if we want this season to finish well we need to remember how strong we are and stop relying on a handful of players to carry us every week. Why we fear oppositions is beyond me but until we crack it days like this will come thick and fast until the end of the season
Man of the Match – Sam – everywhere all game.
