After a week off, Mellor set off with some pace and a commitment to control the game and quickly scored a couple of goals through 2 unselfish assists from George with Jack finishing both well. The score quickly escalated through good teamwork and strong midfield play to finish the quarter 7-1 ahead.
The second quarter saw a quick goal from the Cheadle Hulme number 14 who looked potentially dangerous from the off however, we stayed firm, with a couple of shots from Sam and George saved by their keeper but we managed to add a brace of goals, including a great driving effort from Tom to take it to 11-4 at the end of half time.
At the start of the third quarter, Cheadle Hulme looked like they had a bit more fire in their bellies and rallied with more lively play and some good chances but, we were up to the challenge and shortly after, Tom snook round the corner from behind the goal to take a cheeky one to make it 13-4. Within minutes, George did the same but this time with a driving mid air shot to make it 14-4. A great interception by Joey saw him pick the ball up and drive towards goal to be rewarded with a fine effort, making it 15-4. Other goals came from Sam via a lovely pass from Joey, George and a great individual effort from Tom picking the ball up on the restrainer to drive to goal and smash it home. At this point Cheadle didn’t look like they were going to trouble us too much more and we finished the quarter 19-7. Whilst the lacrosse was entertaining, the more entertaining event in this quarter (at least for the spectators….and a potential quote of the season) came from Coach Rick, clearly frustrated by Mellor’s slightly pedestrian efforts, shouting “Boys, don’t stand there walking!” which amused those watching from the touchline no end.
The final quarter was a bit of a messy affair with a lot of chasing ground ball and uncontrolled aimless flicking of the ball from Cheadle Hulme but nevertheless, we scored another 3 goals.
The end result being a good win at 22-9. A good performance from Mellor but one which left the spectators wondering about the strength of defence , particularly if we come up against a more organised and solid opposition team. Regardless, a good result……keep up the good work boys!!
