A cold morning, an unfamiliar AstroTurf pitch and a much improved Timperley team from the one we beat earlier in the season…. all recipes for a cup upset?

No! An immediate goal from Eddie Jenkins was followed by another from Tom Brady for a quick 2 – 0 lead. A good ball from Jamie Mochan to George Shonfeld saw a good save from the Timperley keeper followed by a better one from our own Ned Donovan.

A topsy turvy first quarter saw us concede 2 sloppy goals with misplaced passes. George delivered another of his trademark goals before Jack Royle bagged his first, 5 more were to follow. Despite Timperley’s No 27 and 14 dominated for periods we finished Q1 at 5 – 2.

Our defence, led by Joe Kynaston upped their game with Toby Halls, Alex Chalmers and Joey Bissell all contributing more than in recent games. More goals from Tom and Eddie saw us reach half time with a comfortable 12 – 3 lead from which we continued to build.

Toby’s first assist saw George notch another as Mellor turned the screws. To their credit, Timperley didn’t resort to barging through with their bigger players but their heads dropped as George, Jamie, plus 3 quick goals from Jack saw us reach ¾ time at 17 – 5.

Clever tactics from Rick and Mark saw us rotate our play. Josh Myers ran well in midfield with Jamie, Ollie Hague and Sam Griffiths all offering great support to our front 3. Despite a late run of free balls for Timperley which perhaps flattered the score line, we ran out 22 – 8 winners and now face Rochdale in Round 2.

Special mention to Jack Royle for his best performance in a Mellor Shirt taking 6 goals. However, its been coming for weeks now and this weeks MOTM is Joe Kynaston. First to every ball, the start of most of our moves and kept his head, even when we wobbled a little - great performance Joe.
