This was an unusual tie. Mellor looked timid and unsure and we missed some performances from some of our more consistent players. Despite a slow start, 2 quick goals from Jamie Mochan, both supplied by George, saw us into a 2 nil lead before Eddie added a 3rd. Heaton Mersey pulled 2 goals back in quick succession for a 3 – 2 quarter time lead.
Heaton Mersey looked more committed to winning the ball, better at checking as they pushed Mellor hard. Ned pulled off another fine save but Heaton Mersey levelled at 3 – 3. We deserved to go behind but Ned held firm before a great pass to Sam and an accomplished finish by Eddie took us into a 4 – 3. Our best performances were coming from our younger players. Ned played the best he has all year, Alex looked strong in defence and on his forward runs. Toby, still in his first season, stood firm in his challenges but we were a shadow of the team we’ve been in recent weeks.
Eddie restored a 2 goal lead before the hard working Tom notched his first of the day. Unselfish play from George saw Eddie fire another then a fine solo goal by George saw us take an 8 – 3 lead. Jake came close to scoring his first of the season and both Ollie Plant and Archie showed signs of what we’ll need this season – hard work and effort.
In the last quarter, with a 5 goal lead it should have been plain sailing but we kept giving the ball away easily and encouraged Heaton Mersey back into the game at 8 – 5. Sam finished the game with a flourish with a great goal with seconds left. On the wrong day, playing like we did today will definitely end our unbeaten run and the boys need to work as hard as our opposition do.
