Mellor opened the season with an away tie at Poynton against Heaton Mersey. With debuts for Josh Myers and Archie Netley the boys quickly settled with Sam feeding Tom for a quick opener. Following a good save by their keeper from Jack Mellor doubled their lead with a great solo goal from Tom who quickly added another for a first half hat-trick.
Showing early season nerves we looked vulnerable and Heaton Mersey pulled one back. Increasingly reliant on George, Sam, Joe and Tom we looked a little lacking but more good work from Tom saw a ball to George to give us a comfortable 4 – 1 lead at half time.
Early in the second half Jamie narrowly missed from a fine pass from Sam before he then drew a great save from the Heaton Mersey keeper. Ned, largely untroubled, pulled off a good save as Heaton Mersey cranked up the pressure and reduced the score to 4 – 2.
With time running out Sam added a fifth before Tom extended the lead. Mellor pushed hard in the last 5 minutes and, with seconds left, Sam scored again to give us a deserved 7 – 2 win.
