This tournament is always a good measure of where we are as a team and what we face in the season ahead so it was with some nerves that we arrived at William Hulme Grammar.
A tough first game vs Stockport left us with a 6 – 6 draw – it was to be the only points dropped as the boys motored to another piece of silverware to top off their success this season.
With our oldest boys now departed this was the start of a new era as Sam Griffiths, Joe Kynaston, Tom Brady and Eddie Jenkins moved into their shoes.
Our 2nd game against Timperley saw us walk out 9 – 1 victors which we quickly followed with an 8 – 1 win against Norbury. Joey Bissell continued to work with Joe Kynaston in an organised 2 man defence in front of our new No 1, Ned Donovan
The boys then notched up an incredible 17 – 2 result against Rochdale with both Eddie Jenkins and Tom Brady playing with real swagger up front. A disjointed 10 – 4 win over Brooklands left us with a game against Poynton who’d gone unbeaten all day
Our midfield continued to share the ball selflessly with Sam Griffiths and George Shonfeld leading the charge as we continued to fast break. Jamie Mochan, more comfortable on the ball, and Jack Royle who put in his best performance to date all giving coach Rick real promise for the season ahead
Winning 7 – 3 against Poynton saw us top the group of 8 giving us a semi final against Cheadle. With us now playing with real confidence we ran our 6 – 2 victors and a place in the final against Stockport.
In their usual style the boys made this game hard work. A quick 2 nil lead quickly evaporated and Stockport moved into a comfortable position but, with the final whistle fast approaching we dragged the game back to 5 – 5 with a wonder goal from George with seconds left.
Golden Goal beckoned – we lost face off before Joey lay his life on the line to prevent a Stockport goal. George, picking the ball up behind goal cleared to Sam who moved the ball quickly to Jack. The final pass to Eddie was perfect as he buried the winner – another great Mellor Final Performance
Player of The Tournament – unanimously, George Shonfeld – brilliant from start to finish, unselfish and 100% committed all day. Bring on next season!
