Mellor perform strongly again in the end of season U10 tournament at Stockport

Mellor entered two junior teams and played 5 games against local opposition, the last game a crunch tie between both Mellor teams:
Mellor Red Team: Joey Bissell, Alex Chalmers, Keiran Reid, Ned Donovan, Jack Royle, George Shonfeld and Jamie Mochan
Mellor White Team: Toby Halls, Robbie Wilson, Oliver Plant, James Smith, Finn Howie, Archie Netley, William Hodgson, Louis Booy and Ellis Booy

With the second event of the year introducing 7 a-side, 6 minute halves and full contact with 3 on 2 power plays, Mellor Red entered the event with confidence. Poynton were the first opponents and even though some of the boys had obviously not picked up a stick through the Easter break, we went into an early lead with goals from George, Jamie and Jack. We finished the game 6-0. There were some great passages of play but on the negative, we did not pick up players in defence and stronger opposition might have tried Ned. We also did not create space and followed the ball which was highlighted to the boys at the end of the game.

Our toughest game was against Stockport and 2-2 was a fair reflection on the game. Their goalie made some fine saves and Alex stood out for his tight man marking and intelligent runs and passing.

Norbury were third on the schedule and this proved to be a game where we had full control. Keiran took some catches well and interlinked with George who passed to Jack for one of the best goals of the day. We switched the positions round throughout the tournament and Joey seemed to enjoy running midfield alongside Alex . Cheadle were next and again we took the game 6-0.

Our last game was against next year’s U12 B Team and whatever John has said to the boys in the pre-game team talk worked. They played exceptionally well and looked well versed in holding positions in defence. The result was always going to be favoured towards the older boys but Archie and Robbie looked very confident on the ball. George tried to score all goals round the back of his head and failed to! The goal of the game and possibly the tournament came from Keiran who had been watching David Beckham videos beforehand and decided to test the keeper from half way and rocketed the ball into the goal.

This was a great day for the children and thanks as always goers to the parents who turn up with lax bag in hand to watch the team. Our real test begins now for the older boys with Flags final this weekend. For those children who are not selected, we would love to have as much support on Sunday at Rochdale so please come along and cheer us on!
