Solid performance in a low scoring game as we warm up for Flags Final

This was a really good performance in atrocious conditions as the boys ran away as 6 – 2 victors against our Flags Final Opponents, Wilmslow
We started well and retained possession for long periods throughout the whole game but we gave away an early goal for the 10th week in a row. Heads didn’t drop and the boys replied for a 1 – 1 first quarter score line.
The game continues to go our way as we chased every ball, fought in every challenge and simply didn’t allow Wilmslow any time on the ball. This has been lacking in our recent performances and bodes well for Rochdale next month especially with several players rested today.
We nudged into a 2 – 1 lead at half time, 3 – 1 at ¾ time and, as we tend to do each week, we turned the screws in the final quarter coming out as 6 – 2 winners with goals from Tom Brady, George Shonfeld and a brace each for Sam Griffiths and Drew Bickerton
Will Macdonald was outstanding in his final league game saving shots from near and far all morning. Alex Chalmers and Joey Bissell, along with Joe Kynaston, really took control of the defence playing with real calmness when under pressure.
Up front Tom Brady challenged their goal all game and as his frustration grew he finally slotted home the goal he deserved. Partnered by George Shonfeld, Eddie Jenkins and Jack Royle this was very much the team of next season.
But it was in midfield where we really dominated. Ben Hodgson is really stepping up and will no doubt flourish in the U14 team next year. Sam Griffiths controlled many of our moves and seemed to have more time on the ball than in recent games. Ben Tipping continued to work hard in the middle as we won more face offs than when we last played Wilmslow.
Finally, Drew Bickerton must have covered every blade of grass today. He was involved in every goal we scored but broke up Wilmslow’s plays on countless occasions. A fine way to sign off your time in the Under 12’s.
So, roll on Rochdale. At full force, and with the commitment that we had today, we’re set to perform really well at Flags Final.
Men of The Match – Will Macdonald and Drew Bickerton share the champagne this week – both put in as a good a game as they have all season – well done boys
