The last Saturday in February bought some better weather conditions and the return of some experienced players. However, there was clearly a half-term hangover as Mellor started slowly with Poynton looking sharper from the start and took an early lead which they maintained throughout the first half. Drew Bickerton got one back with a shot from distance, but the visitors quickly regained their lead before Sam Griffiths again levelled. Another defensive lapse gave Poynton the edge 3-2 at the end of Q1.
Q2 followed a similar pattern with a goal for each team, good work from Sam Griffiths set up Eddie Jenkins for Mellor's goal and chances were beginning to be created which promised a better 2nd half. Half-time 4-3 to Poynton.
Mellor started to assert control in Q3 with more possession and good energy from midfield leading to the creation of several chances, however the Poynton keeper was having an exceptional game and seemed to be stopping everything. Two more goals for Mellor ensured a one goal advantage 5-4 going into the final quarter.
Q4 started with Poynton camped outside Mellor's goal with a lot of possession but they could not convert into clear chances. Mellor took full advantage with some quick breaks that led to several goals as they threatened to pull away. Jamie Mochan gets particular mention for some sharp work which led to his goal. The score quickly advancing to nine. Some late goals from the visitors took the final score to 9-6 which accurately reflected the balance of the game.
Not the best performance by a long way but another win, however the boys will certainly have to step up significantly in next weeks semi-final.
The stats:
Sam Griffiths 4 goals, 2 assists
Eddie Jenkins 1 goal
Drew Bickerton 2 goals, 2 assists
Jamie Mochan 1 goal
Oliver Hague 1 goal
Man of the match, Sam Griffiths - took his chances well at key stages in the game against a strong keeper.
Special mention to Alex Chalmers for coming to support his team mates on his week off. A great effort and an example to everyone.
