This was another strong performance to kick start 2015 against a weaker than usual Timperley A team. Whilst they struggled to bring enough players Ned kindly played the full game in goal for them whilst Alex, Jack, Ollie and Joey all helped to make a game of it.
But Mellor got off to a strong start as they strode into a 5 nil lead at quarter time. Goals from Eddie, Ben T and Drew, plus a brace from George in a period of relentless pressure. Had it not been for some sloppy shooting and near misses the score could have been more.
But Timperley steadied in quarter 2 with Ned pulling off one of several fine saves, this one from Captain Drew. With the benefit of a large squad Rick was able to try various combinations in midfield with Jamie and Ben T linking up well whilst Sam and Drew continued to lead by example setting up several great chances. 2 more goals from hotshot Shonfeld saw us take a 7 – nil lead into half time.
.. and it was more of the same in the 3rd quarter against a Timperley team that’s very much in transition this season. Goals from Sam and Eddie quickly game, Ned pulled off another great save from Eddie and George added yet another brace of goals giving us an 11 – nil lead going into the final quarter
As is becoming customary, Rick used the final quarter to play the boys in different positions. Drew picked up at long pole, Josh Haining and Joe Kynaston charged into midfield as the ever hard working Tom eventually got his goal for a 12 nil lead. Despite probably the best check of the season from Josh Haining Timperley did get a consolation late in the game before Tom doubled his tally and George sealed a fine win with his 7th of the game.
There will be tougher tests coming up but this was a good performance by Mellor.
Coach’s Man of the Match this week went to Jamie Mochan. Good determination in midfield, winning lots of groundballs under pressure from big Timperley players.
