From face off it was clear that this was going to be our toughest test of the season against a well organised Wilmslow team.
After taking an early lead we were pegged back and this was the theme of the day. Drew converted a great pass from Sam to give us a slender 2-1 lead at Quarter time.
The 2nd quarter was a dour affair as both teams scrapped hard but with little invention. Mellor continued to struggle against the size and physique of some of the Wilmslow boys and they pulled us back to 2-2 at half time.
Although lacking some creativity we started to play with more spirit led, as ever by Drew. Our midfield started to win more balls in the middle of the field although we continued to make hard work of easy situations. Despite further goals from Drew and Sam we found ourselves 5-4 down and staring down the barrel of our 1st defeat on the newly christened Sports Club pitch.
Rufus started to show some great touches, some more common on Strictly Come Dancing as he pirouetted around the pitch but the passes started to come. Josh marshalled his defence, Will got angry in goal and we started to turn the screws. More goals from Sam and Drew came, 4 on quick succession as the score moved to 7-7.
….and, with time running out the boys started to win possession, especially from face-offs and this proved to be the deciding factor as Sam, Ben and Drew ran in 3 late goals for a slightly flattering 10-7 victory.
Great support from the parents today too and a special mention to the younger boys who got very little game time – your time will come boys and it’s great to see the team spirit across them all.
The spine of our team, Will, Josh, Drew and Sam helped us enormously today but they all dug in when the needed to. Our Man of the Match is Will – he’s his own biggest critic when he lets a goal in but today he saved countless efforts from Wilmslow – a sterling performance
