An interesting but uninspiring nip and tuck game which was fairly evenly matched. Mellor went 2 up early on in the first half despite our defence being very out of sorts. The rain was pouring which didn’t seem to help and it felt a very uncharacteristic performance from Mellor. Having watched this team through 2 full seasons and not having had to report in a particularly negative vein, I have to say we felt like we were in unchartered waters for a previously solid and committed Mellor U12 boys team. We didn’t look organised anywhere on the field. The only constant was Drew’s unstinting commitment and willingness to run his socks off and chase everything down. We finished the first half 4-3 up but the Poynton team came back strongly at us in the second half taking it to 5-6 with minutes to go. We were very lucky to snatch a late equaliser from Sam to level it and save face. Still, it was a very frustrating game as Mellor never really seemed comfortable and we were definitely not the cohesive team of the previous seasons. We lost George at the end of the game as he was off colour, which didn’t help our cause going into the second game.
