After several weeks of postponed games due to waterlogged pitches, this game actually started under a beautiful blue sky and bright sun - what a change from the weather of late! However the Mellor U12 boys started exactly where they left off in December, thumping an overawed Stockport 1-18.
The first quarter began with the boys showing no signs of needing to settle in, controlling possession and setting the tempo from the outset. Skillful passing, speed of pace of level headedness brought the first quarter to an end with Mellor five up - a hat trick from Dan Jones and two goals from Joe Hussey. The game continued in exactly the same vein with the half time whistle bringing an end to another quarter with five more goals, two from Josh Poke, two more from Joe Hussey and one from Drew Bickerton.
Stockport fought back a little harder in the third quarter after a half where ideas and chances had been few and far between. Ben Mochan, Joe Kynaston and Josh Haining remained resolute in defence, soaking up what little serious threat there was, with Will MacDonald pulling off some great saves while the pressure lasted. Tom Brady and Josh Pink posed real threats with driving play and positioning that allowed Josh Poke to complete his hat trick, and Dan Jones and Joe Hussey to add to their tallies too. Much to the very visible dismay of the Mellor boys, Stockport’s number 36 also sneaked in their only goal of the game, this quarter ending 1-13.
Normal service resumed in the final quarter with two goals coming from Ben Tipping, one each from Dan Pawsey and Nick Hughes and yet another from Joe Hussey, finally bringing the game to a close. A confident and commanding performance over a well-suppressed Stockport.
